- Developer: Google LLC
- Size: 19M
- Version: Varies with device
Android Auto - Google Maps, Media & Messaging is an official car compatible application by Google. It’s designed to let you interact with your smartphone while driving without the need to get distracted from the road. The app has a wide range of integrations, letting you listen to music, get news, navigate, and more.
Functionality – 5/5
Android Auto is designed to let you connect your smartphone to the dashboard screen of your car and achieve a more secure interactive experience. The app enables many voice commands for fast hands-free access to services and apps, as well as a simplified interface that reduces the time needed for navigating in the system.
The app is compatible with Google Maps and popular music streaming services, such as Deezer, Spotify, Play Music, Apple Music, TuneIn, and more. You can launch, close, and control apps using voice commands or on the screen. Google Voice Assistant is a responsive AI that always listens to what you say and rarely makes mistakes while typing something by your words. You can tell it to send and read out loud SMS and messages in online messengers. The notification can provide you with excellent turn-by-turn navigation and even tell you about speed traps and potholes upfront.
Usability – 4/5
Currently, Android Auto - Google Maps, Media & Messaging is compatible with over 300 vehicle models, and the number continues to grow every month. You can also use it to turn your smartphone into the main dashboard screen and get simplified access to everything you need on the go. The only disadvantage is the absence of integrated regional navigation services for supported countries. Of course, Google works nearly everywhere, but you may lack some features and detail of your local systems. As for other services, the package of options is pretty much universal and accessible worldwide.
Interface – 5/5
The latest version of Android Auto is slick and highly convenient. The app makes all the control bigger and easier to use due to the absence of complicated finger gestures. The updated design looks very natural independently from your vehicle model. Yes, it used to be quite ugly, but now it’s nothing but stylish. Now it also has a better control response, which makes it a nice alternative to CarPlay.
Platforms – 5/5
As you can see from the name of the app, it’s available only for Android, because Apple has its alternative vision of the car-connectible service. The app is currently compatible with over 300 car models by around 40 leading manufacturers in the US and worldwide. In most cases, cars support only USB connection, but all the new 2019 and 2020 models already come with wireless connection features and charging.
